What is Liu Yao?
Liu Yao is a divination method based on the I Ching's 64 hexagrams. It developed through Jing Fang's Eight Palaces and Na Jia traditions and later incorporated Shi and Ying, the Six Relatives, Six Spirits, seasonal strength, and moving-line relationships to examine a specific situation and how it may change.
The three-coin method became widespread because six casts are easy to perform and record. The same framework can be used for work, relationships, transactions, travel, lost items, and other concrete matters; the key is to focus on one matter at a time.

How to Cast a Liu Yao Coin Hexagram
Cast each line with coins, generate all six lines instantly, or enter a casting made elsewhere. Every method records the lines from bottom to top and uses the same charting rules.
- Choose one question: Focus on one concrete matter rather than combining unrelated questions.
- Fix the coin convention: Use three matching coins. Heads are Yin and tails are Yang: three heads = 6, two heads = 7, one head = 8, three tails = 9.
- Cast six times: Toss all three coins together and record each result. The first cast is the bottom line and the sixth is the top line.
- Identify changes: Old Yin and Old Yang are moving lines; flipping their polarity forms the changed hexagram.
- Read the chart: Review both hexagrams together with Na Jia, Shi and Ying, Six Relatives, Six Spirits, month, and day.
